Description
La Iglesia de San Patricio was built in 1875 and named of course after Saint Patrick by the priest in comparison of the Hondo Valley to his homeland of Ireland. The church's dominance in the little village of Ruidoso resulted in name change to San Patricio. The Saint Patrick's of today is the second La Iglesia de San Patricio, the first having its Blessed Sacrament removed by Bishop Lamy. The Bishop had offered to buy the property but was refused. Therefore, the Blessed Sacrament was removed and a new Saint Patrick's was constructed on church property in 1885. The old 1875 foundation is all that is left of the original chapel. One of the nine valley chapels, Saint Patrick's is the oldest and stands as a monument to the Faith of the Fathers, those settled this violent little valley. ~April
